Indian Yoga Gurus

India is a land where Yoga is practiced from ancient time. In old days sages and saints taught the methodology of yoga. In modern life many gurus and yoga teacher has help in the resurgence of ancient Yoga Practice for the well being of human society. The Yoga gurus not only worked in the mainland of India but also worked abroad to introduce the glory of Yoga practice to the people of West. The most renowned Yoga Gurus of India are :

B.K.S. Iyenger : B.K.S. Iyenger came from a poor family in South India and learnt Yoga from T. Krishnamacharya. He started his life with a great struggle but gradually became one of the most famous Yoga Gurus In India. He was the author of many books and founded `Ramamani Iyenger Memorial Yoga Institute to pay tribute to his late wife.

Bikram Choudhury Bikram Choudhury: He is probably the most popular name among the Yoga Gurus in the western world. His method of teaching is known as Bikram Yoga, which is the combination of Hatha Yoga. The Bikram Yoga is taught in more than four hundred franchise all over the world.

Paramhansa Yogananda : He was the disciple of Sri Yukteswar Giri. He started his career as a Yoga Guru in India but slowly spread his work in the abroad. He emphasized the underlying unity of the world`s great religions and explained the sole-awakening techniques of Kriya Yoga to his serious students.

Sri T. krishnamacharya : T. krishnamacharya was a wise man, who studied Vedic philosophy, Nyaya , Yoga, Ayurveda in different Universities. His Guru was Sri Rammohan Brahmachari. He emphasized on combining Yoga postures (asana) with meditation (dhyana) and breath technique (pranayama) and worked much on the healing effect of yoga.

K. Pattabhi Jois K. Pattabhi Jois: He was born in a mediocre family of south India and was the perfect disciple of T. Krishnamacharya. He became the Yoga teacher in Sanskrit College, Mysore. Later many Americans and Europeans became his student. He traveled to many countries of Europe and in USA to propagate the practice of Yoga.

Patanjali: PataƱjali is reckoned as the redefiner of Yoga and is the complier of Yofa sutra, which is indeed a major work, containing the metaphysical and earthly connection through the process of Yoga.

Sri Chinmoy: He taught the world the art of living. He was the Indian author and Philosopher. Sri Chinmoy was a genius man who was an artist, painter, musician as well as a good athlete. He had a boundless creativity and traveled throughout the world to discuss spirituality with community leaders.

Swami Jyotirmayananda : Swami Jyotirmayananda is one of the most famous Gurus among the international personalities. He combined various aspects of ancient Yoga practice tradition into a comprehensive plan of personality integration.

Swami Muktananda Swami Muktananda: Swami Muktananda was the founder of Siddha yoga, a new religious movement. He was also the author of number of books including the autobiography entitled `The Play of Consciousness`.

Swami Rama: He was the disciple of Yogi Gurus of Himalaya who held Sankhya Yoga tradition. Swami Rama was the founder of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, whose headquarter is situated at Honsdale, Pennsylvania, USA. There are numerous other Yoga centers all over the world founded by Swami Rama.

Swami Rama Tirtha : Swami Rama Tirtha was a professor of Mathematics in his early life. He had a passion for oneness with the Supreme Lord. He popularized Vedanta in Japan and in USA.

Swami Satchidananda : Swami Satchidananda is one of the most venerated yoga teacher of his time and well-known for his service of interfaith relationships. He compiled practical wisdom and spiritual insight and dedicated his life for the service of humanity. Swami Satchidananda got many awards for his works on peace.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati : He was the student of Swami Sivananda. Swami Satyananda Saraswati emphasized on the Tantra and Yoga . He worked as the editor of the Hindi journal in the Ashram and translated the Brhdaranyaka Upanishad in English. After leaving the ashram he traveled in many countries and popularized Yoga practice there.

Swami Sivanandas Swami Sivananda : Swami Sivananda was the most famous Yoga-Guru who was the teacher of many renowned Yoga-teachers. He was a medical practitioner in his early life who helped the poor men in various ways. He was the founder of Divine Life Society and author of over two hundred books. His disciples propagate his idea all over the world.

Swami Venkatesananda : Swami Venkatesananda renounced his promising career to serve Swami Sivananda. He was the author of numerous books on the biography and work of his Gurudev. Swami Sivananda considered him most dependable among his disciples. He had led the spiritual movement in South Africa and later went to Australia , Madagascar, Mauritius and many other countries of Europe.

Swami Vishnudevananda: He was the perfect disciple of Swami Sivananda. Swami Vishnudevananda was the founder of international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and Ashramas. He entered Rishikesh Ashram at a very young age. His ashram was founded worldwide to practice Hatha Yoga.

Yogi Amrit Desai T.K.V. Desikachar : T.K.V. Desikachar was the son and disciple of Yogaguru Sri T. Krishnamacharya. He started his career as an engineer but later he gave up his career and learned Yoga under his father`s guidance for many years. He emphasized on the practice of asanas. T.K.V. Desikachar wrote many books on Yoga.

Yogi Amrit Desai: Yogi Amrit Desai was the earliest of the pioneers who popularized Yoga in the western world. He was the proponent who evolved Amrit Yoga method.
